Hex is making its AI agent programmable and its generated apps directly editable.
Hex has moved firmly into AI-native analytics, where the primary workflow is instructing an agent to build data apps rather than building them manually. dbt shipped its 2.0 stable release on September 16, the first generational version milestone in the project's history. The release formally renames the CLI: what was 'Fusion/dbt-core' becomes 'dbt' (proprietary) and 'dbt-oss' (open source)—a structural separation that existed in practice but now has an official name. New capabilities include native Databricks metric view materializations, a ClickHouse ADBC driver, and AgentSkill installation from dbt packages gated on a new ai_provider flag.

The natural unlock after BYOK and direct app editing is a publishing or distribution primitive — deploying generated apps to external stakeholders without requiring Hex accounts. Alternatively, multi-model orchestration (routing different tasks to different providers) becomes feasible now that the provider layer is abstracted.
