What is go2rtc?

The universal camera translator keeps absorbing proprietary cloud protocols one vendor at a time.

go2rtc turns almost any camera into a stream any client can consume, and the last year of releases has been a steady march through vendor-specific cloud protocols: Tuya, then a full Xiaomi source including TUTK and cs2 transports, alongside SwitchBot, DoorBird, VIGI and UniFi Protect via ONVIF. Local capture also broadened with a V4L2 source down to MIPS builds. A dedicated security release added path allowlists and local auth to the api, exec and echo modules.

What is JW Player?

JW Player automates CMAF rendition ladders and sharpens ad attribution by player and placement

JW Player is running two parallel feature tracks. The vertical video surface is maturing — from the initial full-screen display mode through localization and now responsive layout changes after load. The ad analytics layer is expanding in the opposite direction: new dimensions linking ad impressions to specific players, placements, and media items give ad ops teams substantially more granular attribution. Mobile SDKs are adding configurable live latency and accessibility controls. The CMAF VOD pipeline now automatically generates a full rendition ladder, removing a manual step that previously required creating individual renditions.

The universal camera translator keeps absorbing proprietary cloud protocols one vendor at a time.

◆ Current state

go2rtc turns almost any camera into a stream any client can consume, and the last year of releases has been a steady march through vendor-specific cloud protocols: Tuya, then a full Xiaomi source including TUTK and cs2 transports, alongside SwitchBot, DoorBird, VIGI and UniFi Protect via ONVIF. Local capture also broadened with a V4L2 source down to MIPS builds. A dedicated security release added path allowlists and local auth to the api, exec and echo modules.

◆ Where it's heading

Two expansions are running at once. Horizontally, each release reverse-engineers another walled-garden camera cloud, which is what makes go2rtc the layer Home Assistant and Frigate build on rather than a competitor to them. Vertically, the Wyoming module pushes past video into voice-assistant audio, which is a different category from streaming cameras. The security release is the counterweight — a project embedded that deeply in other people's stacks cannot keep shipping modules that execute arbitrary paths by configuration.

◆ Prediction

The Xiaomi rework was still landing device-specific fixes in the most recent release, so continued protocol and model coverage for that source is the likeliest next step. Whether Wyoming graduates from work-in-progress is the open question these notes leave.

JW Player automates CMAF rendition ladders and sharpens ad attribution by player and placement

◆ Current state

JW Player is running two parallel feature tracks. The vertical video surface is maturing — from the initial full-screen display mode through localization and now responsive layout changes after load. The ad analytics layer is expanding in the opposite direction: new dimensions linking ad impressions to specific players, placements, and media items give ad ops teams substantially more granular attribution. Mobile SDKs are adding configurable live latency and accessibility controls. The CMAF VOD pipeline now automatically generates a full rendition ladder, removing a manual step that previously required creating individual renditions.

◆ Where it's heading

The vertical video push is product-led — each release tightens the experience for short-form content delivery. The ad analytics expansion looks revenue-led: more dimensions means better yield optimization for publishers running programmatic across varied placements. Automatic rendition creation for CMAF VOD signals that JW Player is reducing operational friction in the media processing pipeline, likely to make it more self-serve for publishers who previously needed engineering involvement.

◆ Prediction

The next likely move is connecting vertical video inventory to the expanded ad analytics dimensions — vertical-specific ad performance data is an obvious gap now that both tracks are mature enough to intersect. Live transcoding automation is another plausible extension of the CMAF rendition work.
