What is Z-Wave JS?

Z-Wave JS overhauls its RCP firmware driver in a nine-PR push toward production readiness.

Z-Wave JS v15.x is in active maintenance and incremental feature development, shipping roughly every 1–3 weeks. The library is the backbone of Z-Wave support in Home Assistant via the Z-Wave JS add-on, and recent releases have split attention between hardware driver improvements (RCP support, proprietary controller commands) and protocol reliability (command deduplication, interview sequencing, S2 encapsulation fixes). The v15.28.0 RCP driver overhaul is the most concentrated single-version effort in this range.

What is NATS?

NATS 2.15 introduces a desired-state reconciliation engine for JetStream, making cluster operations safe to run mid-flight.

NATS is in the RC phase for v2.15, which centers on a new desired-state metalayer for JetStream — a reconciliation engine that makes stream and consumer placement changes safe to execute during ongoing operations. Cancelling in-flight scale/move operations, changing replication factors mid-move, and peer-removing are all significantly safer. The parallel v2.14.7 release backports metalayer compatibility and fixes a set of JetStream data races and consumer state bugs identified during 2.15 testing.

Z-Wave JS overhauls its RCP firmware driver in a nine-PR push toward production readiness.

◆ Current state

Z-Wave JS v15.x is in active maintenance and incremental feature development, shipping roughly every 1–3 weeks. The library is the backbone of Z-Wave support in Home Assistant via the Z-Wave JS add-on, and recent releases have split attention between hardware driver improvements (RCP support, proprietary controller commands) and protocol reliability (command deduplication, interview sequencing, S2 encapsulation fixes). The v15.28.0 RCP driver overhaul is the most concentrated single-version effort in this range.

◆ Where it's heading

The dominant hardware trend in Z-Wave JS is Radio Co-Processor (RCP) architecture support — the new topology used by Nabu Casa Yellow and similar embedded smart home hubs, where the radio is a co-processor with separately updatable firmware rather than a monolithic USB stick. The library is making a clear investment in this path. Alongside that, interview reliability improvements (pausing during inclusion, deduplication of queued commands) signal a focus on reducing setup friction for multi-device deployments.

◆ Prediction

RCP support will graduate from experimental to stable in a coming release as the driver matures. The `lastAwake` persistence added in v15.29.0 is the kind of foundational telemetry that enables smarter polling and sleep-cycle optimization — expect follow-on features that use it.

NATS 2.15 introduces a desired-state reconciliation engine for JetStream, making cluster operations safe to run mid-flight.

◆ Current state

NATS is in the RC phase for v2.15, which centers on a new desired-state metalayer for JetStream — a reconciliation engine that makes stream and consumer placement changes safe to execute during ongoing operations. Cancelling in-flight scale/move operations, changing replication factors mid-move, and peer-removing are all significantly safer. The parallel v2.14.7 release backports metalayer compatibility and fixes a set of JetStream data races and consumer state bugs identified during 2.15 testing.

◆ Where it's heading

The desired-state metalayer is an architectural addition that addresses a real operational risk: JetStream's previous behavior required careful sequencing of cluster topology changes to avoid data loss or inconsistent state. The pattern across recent releases — isolated stream read locks, constant-time removal from service maps, reduced client buffer flushing — shows a systematic performance and correctness pass across JetStream at high scale. NATS is moving toward the safety properties needed for production-critical stateful messaging.

◆ Prediction

v2.15.0 GA will likely ship within weeks of RC.2. The next cycle will probably extend desired-state semantics to more JetStream operations and potentially introduce observability tooling around reconciliation state, giving operators visibility into in-progress cluster changes.
